India Expands Vande Bharat Sleeper Network With New Overnight Trains and Faster Journeys
India expands its Vande Bharat sleeper network with new New Delhi-Varanasi and Bengaluru-Mumbai services. Discover their journey times, berths, speeds, launch dates and the railway network's ambitious expansion plans.
The New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will operate at speeds of up to 160 kmph, with stops at key stations along the route. The train will feature modern passenger amenities, including vacuum toilets, providing overnight travellers with an upgraded travel experience.
The introduction of the service is expected to offer a faster alternative for passengers travelling between New Delhi and Varanasi, with the journey scheduled to take approximately nine to ten hours.
Meanwhile, South India's first Vande Bharat sleeper service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai will begin regular operations on November 3, following its inauguration on November 1.
The Bengaluru-Mumbai service will connect the two cities in approximately 16 hours and operate six days a week. Its introduction marks another addition to the expanding Vande Bharat network, bringing sleeper services to a major intercity route in southern India.
The new services reflect the rapid expansion of India's Vande Bharat train network, which has grown from 35 trains in 2023 to 164 by 2025. The network is targeting 800 trains by 2030, indicating plans for a substantial increase in the availability of these services across the country.
Safety features, including the Kavach system, are also part of the Vande Bharat network's focus, alongside faster journeys compared with older express trains.
With the introduction of new sleeper services on the New Delhi-Varanasi and Bengaluru-Mumbai routes, the Vande Bharat network is extending its reach into overnight travel, combining faster journey times with modern passenger amenities.
